Stories, the vertical 24hr videos that are a popular feature of Instagram and Facebook have launched on LinkedIn, to mixed feedback!
Initial responses suggest this more newsy, in-the-moment way of communicating has no place on a corporate-based social media platform.
Pete Davies, Head of Content Products at LinkedIn, says, ‘Last year, we started asking ourselves what LinkedIn Stories might look like in a professional context. Stories first appeared on Snapchat, with other platforms like Instagram and Facebook adopting them soon after. They spread for a good reason: they offer a lightweight, fun way to share an update without it having to be perfect or attached to your profile forever.’
So what are LinkedIn Stories and how do I use them?
Stories are brief, full-screen, vertical videos, appearing separately to a member’s feed. Stories disappear from your feed after 24 hours unless you choose to save them. They’re for sharing places, moments, banter – not for the more serious topics or announcements.
Use stories to gain feedback: Like other Story platforms, LinkedIn allows you to post a poll or Q&A – this is a great way to gain feedback on an idea and get a greater understanding of how people view your business.
Speak to others in your sphere: Reach out and get other’s thoughts on the state of the market, trends, etc. Stories are a quick and informal way of talking directly to your connections about developments in your industry.
Where are you: If you’re attending an event then share it with your followers. It will let people know you’re active in the marketplace and networking in the right places and with the right people.
Share news and knowledge: Stories are a great way to leave the viewer with a sense of your expertise and professionalism. Share something you’ve learned that day, tag people and companies you’ve met.
Make your Linkedin more personal: By appearing frequently in front of your connections, you will strengthen your bond with them. They will become increasingly familiar with you and your brand and consequently be more likely to use and recommend your products or services.
Don’t write off stories before you’ve tried it.
With social media platforms constantly changing and adding new features, it’s easy to just stick with what you know but new features are often given more weight by the platforms’ algorithms so ignore them at your peril! Stories is a fun feature that gives you another chance to put your face and your brand in front of your connections, it’s shorter shelf life mean it’s less formal, making it the perfect place to humanize your brand and connect with old and new followers in a different way. Go on, give it a go!
